How Does a Microwave Work?

!9#: How Does a Microwave Work?

It's one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Millions of people around the world own them and most people use them everyday. What am I speaking about? The microwave, of course! In today's society people live extremely busy lifestyles, making the microwave oven an extremely popular household appliance. What the oven takes hours to do, the microwave does in minutes. But how does it do it? If you have ever wondered how the microwave actually works than you have come to the right place. Throughout this article we will discuss what microwaves are as well as how they cook our food. By the end of the article you will have a much better understanding of how our most valuable appliance actually works!

We all know what the microwave oven is and the majority of us use it in our everyday lives. Microwaves are a great addition to any household because they cook foods up to six times quicker than the regular oven and thus help to make our hectic lives a little less hectic. How do they work so quickly? As the name states, microwave ovens use microwaves to heat food. What are microwaves? Microwaves are radio waves that are approximately 2, 500 megahertz and which can be absorbed by water, fats, and sugars. Luckily, these radio waves are not absorbed by other things such as plastics, ceramics, or glass, allowing us to safely place them into the oven without any safety hazards.

How does the microwave oven create microwaves, or radio waves? Inside the microwave oven there is a generator, called a magnetron, that creates microwaves using magnetic energy. Once the microwave is turned on, the magnetron takes the electricity from the power outlet and converts it into microwaves. These microwaves are then transferred into the compartment where the food is kept. Once the microwaves are in the food compartment they penetrate the food. Inside the food, the microwaves make the food molecules vibrate quickly. The faster the molecules vibrate, the hotter the food becomes. Thus, the quick vibration of the microwaves allows food to be heated much quicker than in the regular oven.

One concern of most people using microwaves is the effects of radiation. It is important to understand that eating food that has been heated using radiation is completely safe. All heat is radiation, and thus, even when cooking in a regular oven, you are cooking with radiation. People also worry about leakage of radiation from the microwave. However, if there were to be a radiation leak, it would be minimal and would not put anyone at risk. Thus, despite widespread fears of radiation, the microwave is generally considered to be a very safe way of heating foods.

So there you have it! In summary, the microwave oven uses radio waves to penetrate food and vibrate molecules within the food, making it heat up much quicker than it would in the regular oven. Now that you know how your favourite appliance works you can share all of your new knowledge with your friends and family!

What Can You Chop in a Food Processor?

!9# What Can You Chop in a Food Processor?

Well, what can you chop in a food processor? Almost everything! Over the years I have enjoyed becoming a gourmet cook after learning all the wonderful things that I could do with a food processor. My food processor of choice is Cuisinart. In my opinion, there is none better. Cuisinart has the ability to perform beautifully and make you look like a professional chef.

With that said--What can you chop in a food processor? Let's start with meats. You can buy different cuts of red meat and make your own hamburger. Compare the price per pound of ground meat and then check the cuts of meat that your grocery store may be running a sale on--sometimes you will certainly find that ground meat is more expensive. After all, the store is paying the butcher to grind the meat. But, if you grind your own meat you will know exactly what is in it.

It is so easy to chop your own meat. Simply cube the cut of meat, remove any fat and place the steel knife blade in the bowl of your processor. Turn it on and let it process until you are happy with the results. You control how finely you want to chop or grind. You can make wonderful meat loaves or hamburgers this way.

If you have a baby, you can make fresh baby food. This is done by using the steel knife blade in the bowl and chopping until you have pureed the food, fruits or vegetables.

You can make lovely, smooth, creamy pates the same way. You can also cream soups, by pureeing the vegetables a few batches at a time. Do not fill the bowl up completely, as when you turn it on to process it will run over.

When I make my pesto, I always shred the Parmesan first, by using the shredding disc. If you want finely grated Parmesan, you can chop it with the steel knife blade. Just cut the Parmesan cheese block into cubes and place it in the bowl, process until it is finely grated. Any time that you do a hard cheese, you will find it to be loud at first, so do not be surprised!

I always remove the Parmesan before I add my other ingredients for my pesto and then I add it back in at the last of the recipe. That's a personal choice.

Yes, you can chop ice in a Cuisinart. I usually add a couple of tablespoons of cold water to my ice cubes and then turn it on. This will be very loud at first. You may want to use the pulse button to get the degree of chopped ice that you want.

Food processors are a wonderful, time saving kitchen appliance. If you have one, you will learn many short cuts to great meal preparation, the more that you use it. This is the one appliance I do not want to be without!
